I’m currently teaching a three day seminar on emotional intelligence. One piece of research that has become important to the seminar has to do with EQ and job function and age. TalentSmart has done research that shows EQ decreases with certain job functions and for people over 60. Interesting. This raised a question about executives. Do people, as they progress upward in their careers become less emotionally intelligent? Are executives tempted to ignore EI because, well…they’ve arrived. Hmmm…

 

Reminds me of the old Jewish proverb: He who thinks he is finished…is.

 

I’m not sure if research around the executive EQ question is “out there.” However, it’s clear that we are prone to stop growing once we believe we’ve arrived. The goal is to stay curious and hungry to develop and grow.
