Goodwin’s book came out in 2005 and created a splash during the days just prior to and after President Obama’s election. I can’t recommend it enough. I actually listened to the abridged version on iTunes which was great because the narrator is Richard Thomas (John Boy, The Waltons). He was my TV hero growing up. Whether you read or listen, the historical story is fascinating in and of itself. But, if you want a case study in how to navigate the power and politics of relationships, as a leader, this is it. Lincoln’s savvy and shrewdness come out in spades and are extremely instructive for leaders who work with friends and rivals while they try to move a strategic mission forward. It’s worth it.
